ASD is a defect in the septum between the heart's two upper chambers (atria). The septum is a wall that separates the heart's left and right sides. An atrial septal defect is an opening in the atrial septum, or dividing wall between the two upper chambers of the heart, known as the right and left atria. ASD can be a congenital (present at birth) heart defect, or it can result from the failure of normal postnatal closure of a hole that is present in the heart of every fetus.

An atrial septal defect (ASD) is a hole in the septum, which is the muscular wall that separates the heart’s two upper chambers (atria). An ASD is a defect you are born with (congenital defect) that happens when the septum does not form properly. It is commonly called a “hole in the heart.” A secundum ASD
Atrial septal defects (ASD) constitute 7-10 % of all congenital heart disease.

The patient had severe mitral stenosis and ASD secundum; therefore, intervention is required to prevent rising pulmonary artery pressure by increased flow through the right-sided heart, and she had occasional shortness of breath as well which she thought might be due to bronchial asthma.

Både ASD och VSD kan om nödvändigt slutas med operation. Ostium Primum ASD is easily diagnosed in fetal echocardiography, while secundum ASD is virtually impossible to diagnose prenatally due to physiologically open vieussens valve through foramen ovale in fetus. Another subtype of partial ASVD is an inlet VSD. Different types of atrial septal defects can occur, and they are classified according to where in the separating wall they are found. The most commonly found atrial septal defect occurs in the middle of the atrial septum and accounts for about 70% of all atrial septal defects.

Perkutan transluminal tillslutning av ASD, ostium secundum -typ. Percutaneous transluminal closure of ostium secundum type ASD ASD. ANATOMI. ➢ASD secundum är vanligast.
An atrial septal defect of the secundum type is relatively common and occurs from failure of the septum secundum to develop. This results in a communication between the left and right atrium
Secundum defects are the most common. Most patients are asymptomatic. Untreated defects can produce right atrial enlargement, cardiac arrhythmias, and heart failure over time.
